DON'T GIVE YOUR POWER AWAY

I am proud to lend this platform to support the Auguste The Label x UN Women campaign. 1OO% of proceeds of this T-shirt  will go to UN Women; supporting programs & policies to end violence + provide education to support women’s employment & leadership development.⠀

I was asked to share what empowerment means to me right now. To me empowerment as a woman in 2O18 is about not giving your power away. Giving your power away can happen in many forms & we have been doing it for so long that it has almost just become second nature to us. ⠀

Any articles or conversation pieces I write, I do so from an observation of my own behaviors. ⠀

To me the most incredible women are those with an educated opinion, empathy and an open mind.
— Samantha Wills

I have given my power away over the years by apologizing. Like, apologizing All. The. Time. I would find myself starting general sentences with “sorry” & for a long time I would move out of someone’s way, & then reflexively apologize for being IN their way…⠀

I would also not own my own point of view; even though I believed in something passionately I would go along with other people’s points of view, staying quiet even though I didn’t agree with their opinion & often times – & this is the worse bit - the opinion that I was simply going along with actually compromised my own values. ⠀

So here we are, in 2O18 & it’s a new world. It’s time to step into our own, yes collectively for gender parity, but also into our individual own. ⠀

What are YOUR opinions? ⠀

It may be different to what your parents taught you growing up, & that’s OK. Your opinions may evolve over time & a value you used to hold may no longer serve you today. You might find yourself in a conversation with friends where there is the usual gossiping / shit-talking but all of a sudden it doesn’t sit well with you and instead of going along with it, you speak up about it (or remove yourself from it). ⠀

You don’t have to just go along with what you are taught / told / read. TO ME THE MOST INCREDIBLE WOMEN ARE THOSE WITH AN EDUCATED OPINION, EMPATHY & AN OPEN MIND. ⠀

The kindest (& bravest) thing you can do for yourself, is to not give your power away. Own your power, own your voice, own your space.

Be kind, always.– SWx ⠀
